Penny is a Gynaecological Oncologist who is qualified to care for women with gynaecological cancers. She specialises in the care of women who are diagnosed with cancer of the ovary, fallopian tube, uterus, cervix and vulva and vagina. She is an advanced laparoscopic pelvic surgeon and is frequently involved with the care of women who require more challenging benign pelvic surgery.
She has also had a long interest and expertise in colposcopy of the female genital tract.
Penny carried out her basic medical training and subsequent specialist certification in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the UK. She emigrated to Australia in 1994 following her marriage to an Australian. She then completed a fellowship in Gynaecological Oncology at the Mercy Hospital for Women in Melbourne for 2 years, and a further one year in Halifax Novascotia, Canada, and achieved her subspecialist certificate in Gynaecological Oncology.
She initially worked as a Gynaecological Oncologist at the Mercy Hospital for Women in Melbourne and moved to the Royal Hobart Hospital in Tasmania in 2000.
Penny was full time director of the Tasmanian State-wide service of Gynaecological Oncology from 2000 -2016 and continues to hold a public sector appointment.
Penny was appointed Clinical Associate Professor to the University of Tasmania in 2007. She has been involved in clinical research as a member of Australian and New Zealand Gynaecological Oncology Clinical Trials Group (ANZCOG) since the inception in 2000. She sat on the research advisory committee (RAC) for ANZCOG for over 12 years. She has been a member of the Committee of Management of the Australian Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (ASCCP) since 2009 and was secretary of the society from 2013-2015. She is presently Chair of the Australian Society of Gynaecological Oncologists (ASGO).
Penny Blomfield sees patients privately for an appointment on Tuesdays and Thursdays in her Hobart rooms in Elizabeth Street. She consults in Launceston on alternate Fridays. If your appointment is very urgent she will sometimes see patients at other times.
Penny is a gynaecological oncologist and has trained in the treatment of woman with gynaecological cancers and premalignant gynaecological disease. It may be necessary to give some patients preference for an earlier appointment because of this. Penny will also see women with gynaecological problems unrelated to cancer and pre-cancer.
